What’s up guys today I’m going to tell you everything that you need to know about the New Gen 3 Yola paddles before we dive in in this video I’ll be talking about most of the paddles from a high level overview and not the nitty-gritty of each shape Yola was supposed to have the production models to the reviewers much earlier but we didn’t actually get.

Them until yesterday before this review was supposed to go up so I’ll give you the main information you need to know to make an educated purchase but just know that I will have individual or follow-up reviews later on in the future one quick clarification I want to add in here is you’re going to hear me say the term gen 3 Yola now I know this is confusing cuz.

We often say gen one raw carbon fiber and Gen 2 in this context we’re using the term gen 3 because that’s what Yola is calling their paddles they had the original hyperian then the Perseus was their Gen 2 and now these are their gen 3 so just wanted to put that clarification out there the models that I have been testing for the last few.

Weeks were the alphas that Yola sent us home with from their launch event but they did tell us that these are supposed to be identical to the production models just with a different paint job of course I’ll verify that myself when I actually have time to hit the production models but for now that’s what we’re working with if you have followed the.

Pro scene at all you’re probably very aware that the new Yola’s hit extremely hard and this is because of their new core design that they’re calling propulsion core the big change to this Core Design is that Yola has put a white foam around the polymer core from the edges to the top and this is what has allowed the paddle to have more power.

This is in addition to the foam that is in the edge guard in a typical thermal formed paddle I asked Yola if they would classify this as a floating core similar to the gearbox and their response was regarding the term floating core this doesn’t accurately describe our design as the honeycomb isn’t fully surrounded or suspended by other materials in our.

Approach we maintain a direct connection from The Sweet Spot to the handle which ensures precise feedback and feel for the player this unique connection SL design enhances paddle flexibility and stability providing better control compared to a floating core which after cutting One open this answer honestly makes a lot of sense it’s kind of just.

Like a second layer of foam around the core similar to the one that we’ve seen in the edguard it’s just a much softer material what is interesting is if you take your hand and press in the areas where the new foam is you can actually feel the face cave in and bend with the foam in those areas so the center is very rigid but those edges have a lot of.

Give to them one small new feature are these NFC chips inside the handle Yola says these are here to help verify that your paddle isn’t fake and also make it easier to register your warranty you can download the Yola Connect app and hold your phone to the paddle and it will give you all the information about your specific paddle and allow you to.

Register your warranty through the app it mostly seems to just be a small quality of life feature to make warranties easier the other big announcement with this line of paddles is the introduction of their new shape the Magnus this is Tyson mcguffin’s signature paddle this means that Yola now has the Perseus Hyperion scorpus and.

Magnus as their four shapes the Perseus and H H perion are essentially the same exact shape except the Hyperion has rounded Corners at the head the Scorpius is the standard shaped paddle and the Magnus is an elongated paddle with a short 5.25 in handle which is the same exact shape as the cell Kirk Power air or 002 that Tyson used to use everything.

Is the same between each model except for the shape there’s no exclusive core surface or any material to one specific paddle shape the one you choose will depend on your personal preferences for shape and swing weight at the time of launching this video the price of this paddle is $280 and there are no discount codes available I think that code PB.

Studio should save you 10% at some point in the future but it doesn’t sound like that’s coming anytime soon the link in the description does help support the channel so if you get any value out of this I would appreciate if you use that link otherwise no hard feelings since Yola didn’t send me production models of every version of the new paddles I don’t.

Have swing weight and twist weight numbers for everything but I will pop on screen what I have now if you would like to see the specs for all of the other paddles I would encourage you to go to Yolo’s website because that would be a lot of specs to put on the screen with eight different paddles now one thing I do want to call attention to is the grip.

Sizes of these paddles because for the 16 mm they’re listed as 4.25 in and then for the 14 mm versions they’re listed as 4 and 1/8 in but when I got to start messing with mine none of those felt quite right when I measured my 16 mm they were coming in at just below 4 and 3/8 in and then for the 14 mm they were just barely over 4.25 in so this is a.

Little bit disappointing because I actually really like a 4 and 1/8 in grip and I think some of these 16 mm are going to feel a bit clunky in certain people’s hands cuz 4 and 38 in is pretty large so just keep that in mind if you’re very sensitive to grip sizes if you’re not then no worries all right let’s talk about this paddle biggest.

Selling feature and that’s the power these were clearly designed to rival the gearbox Pro Power and they do exactly that everything I’m about to say whether it’s a Hyperion pereus Magnus or Scorpius applies to all of them while there are subtle differences between each shape they’re all rockets and hit very hard including the Scorpio 16 mm.

None of the paddles in this new lineup are control paddles so I know in the past you kind of looked at the Scorpius as like oh this is the control version of the other ones no all of them are absolute rockets in this new generation if you watched my original gearbox Pro Power review you might be familiar with the flick overlay test that I did we ran.

This test again with the Gen 3 yolas and well this clip should probably tell you everything you need to know about the speed of these paddles I might need to invest in some protective equipment so I don’t have to pay out a bunch of workman’s comp to my brother next time okay on a serious note.

Here’s an overlay between a gen one voler Mach 1 and the Scorpius 3 16 mm the time difference between each of these two paddles to reach my brother was 0.35 seconds for the Gen 1 and 0.23 seconds for the Gen 3 YOLO now we can also overlay the gearbox Pro Power which came in at 0.19 seconds so the new Yola is technically a bit slower than the.

Gearbox but when you’re on the other side of the net they both feel really flipping fast those time differences at first glance may seem extremely small but when you think about how fast someone reacts on average those time differences are huge at 0.35 seconds for the Gen 1 it’s traveling at 40 ft per second the Gen 3 Yola at 0.23 seconds is.

60 ft per second and the gearbox Pro Power is 73 ft per second all right so the day that we filmed that flick test we forgot to bring a Gen 2 paddle which I know feels like a massive oversight but we did do that test with a Gen 2 paddle later but we weren’t able to do the overlay with it because we would have had to redo all of the paddles and.

There just wasn’t enough time to do that before this video went out but on the Gen 2 volir Forza Mach 1 we got a flick test that was around 0.28 seconds which actually comes out to 50 ft per second but it went 40 ft per second with the Gen 1 50 ft per second for the Gen 2 60 ft per second with the new yolas and then 73 ft per second with the gearbox.

So sorry that we weren’t able to put that overlay in this video but that is the information that you should need to know about it so I hope all of those numbers help translate to you just how fast these paddles are it can be really hard to grasp how big of a difference this really feels until you’re actually on the other side of the net from one.

Now you can probably imagine that if with barely any back swing these paddles can generate that much speed think about what they can do when you take a full-blown swing at an overhead or a drive it’s completely ridiculous every shot you want to hit is fast drives overheads flicks speedups there’s nothing about these paddles that are.

Slow I would place it probably a hair below a gearbox but not by much in fact these new yolas and the gearbox are kind of in their own League of power if you ask me I know that technically on paper some paddles come close in terms of Miles hour speed but when hitting these side by side with most other power paddles there’s a very perceptible.

Difference in their speed when playing against them on Court and that’s not just my opinion of hitting them I’ve also received that feedback from the people that I’m playing on the other side of the net while it may be a hair below the gearbox in terms of power I do think that the control for most people is going to be better on the Gen 3 yolas.

The primary reason for this is because the sweet spot is much larger and the yolas don’t need lead tape to bring it out the gearbox sweet spot on the other hand was much improved by adding lead but then you are making the paddle heavier this alone will make it easier to control for most people because you have more margin for air around the face.

But don’t get it twisted these are still extremely hard paddles to use and I’m going to say that they will be best used by players who are four five and above that doesn’t mean that you can’t use them if you’re a lower rating you just may have a harder time using them in fact I’ve now had several weeks with the new paddles and I still don’t feel.

Comfortable in several aspects of my game particularly blocking in the midcourt and resetting at the kitchen oddly enough though when I took the gearbox out again I had a much easier time resetting and blocking with it than I did on the yolas but I did also have 3 months of of use on the gearbox so that could easily be chocked up to having.

More experience on the paddle when it came to the Gen 3 yolas I oddly found the 14 mm versions easier to use than I did the 16 mm now this is a bit of an odd statement I know because traditionally this has never been the case but there’s something about these new models where the 16 mm paddles feel like a slingshot and I could never find.

The perfect speed to swing the paddle to get the shot that I actually wanted on the 14 mm the ball felt a lot more predictable and more consistently did what I expected it to I still think for most people watching this video the 16 mm is going to be the better option but for me personally I was having an easier time on the thinner ones but I have a.

Feeling I’m going to be one of the only people who actually feels this way so you can take that part with a big grain of salt and I would push you towards the 16 mm now let’s talk about what these feel similar to after hitting and comparing with a lot of paddles the best comparison I have found is that they feel like an engage Pursuit Pro and.

Gearbox Pro Power had a baby the dwell time of the yolas feels very large like the gearbox but then off the face it feels very crisp and solid the engage Pursuit Pro is another very crisp and solid feeling paddle and somehow the Yola manages to make the pursuit feel a lot less crisp and almost more mushy in comparison I found it to be a very.

Satisfying feedback when hitting the ball and it just feels very responsive off the face pedals are so gritty that I stuck it to my shirt and it is staying there this is Su this is absurd let’s see if it’ll like that’s insane it’s stuck to my shirt look at this I’m literally I don’t think that one will.

Though will no this one no this one won’t but the Magnus is so like you can hear it yeah bro so I’m recording this update about 12 hours before this video needs to go live and we got our production models and we wanted to check the grit on them because obviously from that last clip you saw one of ours was clearly EX.

Extremely gritty so I ran a stere test on all of them and none of them passed but it depends on which standard you’re using so if you use usap standards the paddle did not pass now if you’re using PPA grit standards based on the PPL rules basically all of my paddles would pass so it depends whose rules you’re going by PPL is only for pros and usap.

Is kind of for everybody but at this time time I just don’t feel comfortable publishing numbers on paddles that I know are higher than what would normally be legal for usap so I just don’t want to put numbers out there that excite a lot of people and that’s the reason they go and buy the paddle I’m sure you can find ones just as gritty as mine in the.

Wild I have been to plenty of shops and felt other yolas that are equally as gritty as this but I just don’t want to put out exciting numbers that create a lot of buzz when I don’t know if that’s how it’s going to be in the future okay let’s talk about durability I have not had these paddles long enough to observe any immediate issues with the paddles.

But I want to set people’s expectations properly Yola has never been known for having amazing QC on their paddles whether that’s grit consistency core crushing issues on the last Gen 2 paddles or even handle snapping on the original Hyperion so before anyone gets too excited and makes assumptions about these being more durable we’re going to.

Need to see these on the market for more time to really establish what the durability is like if you guys watched my updated gearbox review you may recall me talking about the ethics of that paddle and I want to do something similar here because I have a feeling this is going to be a large discussion in pickle ball moving forward gearbox.

And Yola are not the only two that have had power cores in development I won’t be surprised if in the next four to 6 months you see everyone have a variant that tries to achieve a similar result personally I believe that with the gearbox and these yolas we’ve hit what I believe should be the upper limit of power in this game honestly I kind of.

Think we would be be better off if we capped the power below these paddles and I think if we continue to go down this road of trying to one up the gearbox and Yola it’s going to take the game to a place that I don’t think anyone wants it to go when we were at the Yola event demoing these paddles the first hour or two of people hitting them was just.

Everyone blasting the ball because you can hit it so much harder than anything else it almost didn’t even feel like you were playing pickle ball because the objective became blast every ball and pray for a popup to put away or just hit your opponent and is that really what we want pickle ball to become if you want even more evidence of how fast and hot.

These paddles are here’s my brother’s knee after I managed to hit him with a serf this was from Baseline to Baseline not Baseline to kitchen now here’s my friend’s shoulder after my brother managed to hit her with a drive from Baseline to Kitchen I show these because outside of the gearbox I have never seen people have such a hard time reacting to.

A paddle it’s very evident to me that these are extremely powerful and doing things to people that you don’t regularly see I wish the organizations both PPA and usap would take a stance on where paddles are because both organizations have failed in my opinion and have allowed these paddles to get to places that I don’t think we ever wanted.

Them to go in the last few months protective eyewear has been a serious discussion where a year and a half ago no one was talking about eyewear like they are now even a lot of my friends are starting to put them on because it just isn’t worth the potential damage to your eye with the speed of these paddles I think Ben JN said it best in a recent.

Interview with John Q So speaking of kind of where power limitations should be capped is there a paddle on the market today you kind of think okay this is about as fast as a paddle needs to hit yeah um you know I I don’t think I’m the right person to decide what that should be uh I it’s hard for any one person to decide what it should be but I.

Think when it’s gotten to the point of people are wearing safety glasses predominantly you’ve probably hit that point think you know I agree I see a lot of amateurs wearing safety glasses on court now too I think it’s very advisable uh especially at the amateur level because ACC for sure there’s so much less accurate it’s like with Pros I.

Was literally telling Anna earlier today I was like I’m so much more uncomfortable playing against these amateurs right now than any pro like I I don’t really care who the pro is as hard as you hit at least you know where you’re hitting it right I guess I say all of this in hopes that organizations will finally put proper regulations and.

Caps on the game so we don’t continue to get out of hand if we decide to cap it at the gearbox and Yola so be it but at least take a stance and don’t continue to let this happen to the game all right so let’s talk about paddle Breakin so now that I’ve gotten to hit our production models side by side with the alpha there is definitely a difference.

Between them now as far as I’m able to tell right now this seems to be a similar story as the gearbox where the more you use it it just starts to change a little bit now I want to be very clear this is not like the gearbox where some people got one and it just didn’t hit hard out of the box at all all of our production units still hit very hard.

They’re still very powerful but when hit side by side with our Alpha the feel is a little bit different and it definitely feels a bit hotter off of the ones that have been used more I thought this was a really important update to put in here because if you guys are going to go and buy one you may experience this yourself as well some of the production model.

Ones that I got to hit tonight I did find that they were easier to control still not easy but definitely easier than what I had been dealing with leading up to recording this review so if you’re going to buy one just know that there is a chance there is a Breakin period on this paddle which is crazy that we even have to say that in.

2024 about pickle ball paddles okay now I’m going to try and help you decide which one you should pick if you are really set on buying one of these while I haven’t had time to cover all of the nuances of each shape and thickness yet I’m going to give you my high level impressions as it stands right now when it comes to choosing the thickness first.

They all hit very hard and will be some of the most powerful paddles that any of you have ever used regardless of if it is the 16 mm or 14 mm now most of you should choose the 16 mm there’s already plenty of power that most of you are not going to need more in fact most of you are going to wish it had more control now if you really want a lot of pop at.

The kitchen line then the 14 mm are probably going to be what you want just know that you’re going to sacrifice some stability for it now when it came to what is the fastest to swing at the net I don’t have any Hyperion versions yet so I can’t give you any information about those but if you are trying to figure out which will be slowest to.

Fastest it’s probably going to be the percus in last followed by the Magnus Hyperion and then the Scorpius being the fastest since the Scorpius 3 still hits really hard I think this is going to be a really popular model this year because you have the additional hand speed but still more power than most paddles that exist today for singles my.

Recommendation right now would be any of the elongated models Perseus Hyperion or Magnus it will just come down to what you want from your shape the Magnus has the shortest handle and is the same shape as the cerk Vanguard and Victa while the perus has less face but a longer handle for a two-handed backhand the Hyperion is going to be nearly.

Identical to the Perseus in shape the only difference is the corners which are more rounded on the Hyperion and will probably drop the swing weight and make it a bit easier to swing my initial thoughts on which shape has the largest Sweet Spot would be Scorpius Magnus pereus and then Hyperion again I’m ballpark guessing on the Hyperion based.

On prior paddle knowledge and experience I haven’t actually hit one yet generally I think you’re going to find that they all have very nice sweet spots and that the Scorpius has the largest due to being a widebody and a higher twist weight the differences between the Hyperion Perseus and Magnus are probably going to be a bit more subtle.

Objectively these new paddles are top tier I think these are some of the best paddles that have ever been made for our game but I’m going to say that most of you watching this video shouldn’t buy one one remember that the power you gain is going to come at the price of control and that price is not cheap in the case of these paddles if you don’t have very.

Soft hands or great timing on your Technique you’re probably going to struggle to use these my prediction is that these are going to be wildly popular and you’re going to see them everywhere but I think you will start to see a drop off in their usage because players will realize that these are very hard to use and while they’re incredibly.

Fun it might not actually be the paddle that helps you play your best game I actually think most people would play better with a gen 1 raw carbon fiber paddle than they would these New Gen 3 yolas that’s not to say some of you won’t absolutely love these and Excel with it of course a portion of the market will but I don’t think that most.

Will be able to use it effectively I feel like the gearbox was a great history lesson about what we can probably expect with these new gen 3 Yola paddles so while there’s going to be extreme hype and talks about these paddles for months to come I would really suggest that you try and hit one yourself before you buy one now if you.

Want to know what my favorite of these so far was it was the scorpus 14 mm like I said before for some odd reason I just have an easier time controlling the 14 mm and this applied across the board whether it was the pereus the Magnus or the scorpus which are the only units I have I found those much easier to use but the Scorpius was great because your.

Hand speed is extra fast at the net I’ll be surprised if I end up liking any of the other thicknesses or shapes more than the anab bright Scorpio 14 mm but I guess we’ll have to wait and see so if you’re a heavy singles player a highly aggressive doubles player or just love to drive the ball then these paddles are awesome but let’s just remember that.

More power isn’t always better thanks for watching guys and I’ll catch you in the next one
